Questions you may want to ask about Adoption

Who can adopt?

All kinds of people can become adoptive parents including single people, married people, people with or without children. Adoptive parents must have the ability to offer a stable, loving home to a child who for whatever reason is unable to remain with their own family.

Do adopters have to be employed and own their own homes?

No, when the Sheriff is considering whether to grant an adoption petition, s/he has to be satisfied that the applicants can afford to bring up a child.

I am interested in adopting a child in the 0-2 age range. How do I go about this?

If you meet the criteria for a child of this age then you should read the information on  children 0-2. This service is run by Glasgow and West of Scotland Adoption Service (GWSAS) and  places all children aged 0-2 years from Glasgow and its partners who require an adoptive placement.

Are there different criteria for different ages of children?

Yes. The criteria for adopting children 0-2 years of age has specific age and geographic criteria. The criteria for the adoption of older children or sibling groups is more flexible. Please read the criteria for adopting children 3+.

Does smoking affect your application?

Neither GWSAS nor Glasgow City Council currently operate a policy of refusing prospective applicants who smoke but this is under review by GWSAS.

Can you adopt if you are overweight?

Neither GWSAS or Glasgow City Council operate any policy which would automatically de-bar an applicant from being approved because of their weight, but prospective applicants should be aware that a BMI in the morbid obesity range (BMI in excess of 40) may preclude adoption.

What support can adoptive parents expect?

We have a duty to offer to offer lifelong support to adoptive  parents and their families. Support groups are available to adoptive families and individual support from a social worker can be arranged.

Should children be told that they are adopted?

Yes, children should be raised knowing they were adopted. Adoptive parents should give appropriate information to the child from the time the child is little and as s/he grows.

What is the next step?
