Questions and answers
Who can become foster carers?
All kinds of people can become carers including single people, married people, people with or without children. Ideally we would like carers who are healthy and do not smoke.
What accommodation do you need?
You can either own or rent your flat or house. We would prefer if you had a spare room for the children you foster.
I have health problems - would you still consider me as a carer?
We would need to ensure that your problem will not be affected by caring for children and so we would need to ask your permission to seek our medical adviser’s assistance.
I smoke - will this affect my application?
Ideally we would like all children to grow up in a smoke free environment but we recognise that some carers find it very difficult to stop smoking. Carers must provide an area that is smoke free for the children.

Can you foster if you are overweight?
If your weight affects your ability to care for children this would be considered carefully and discussed with yourself.
My partner has a police record - can we still be considered as carers?
To protect children from harm there are some offences that would bar people from fostering. If you are concerned about a criminal record you should discuss at the earliest opportunity.
What support do foster carers receive?
All foster carers have their own link worker who will visit them regularly. The link workers will discuss issues of importance to the carers and support them during placements.
Do foster carers get paid?
All foster carers get paid allowances to ensure that they can provide adequately for the child’s day-to-day needs.
