Fostering Memories

Below are some memories associated with fostering

'Image of ticket to Glasgow Garden FestivalWhen you choose to foster you get to be a kid again yourself in some ways: one of my favourite memories was going on the Coca-Cola rollercoaster at the Garden Festival with the children I was fostering.  They loved it - I was terrified! But that hot sunny day and their happy faces is one of my best-ever memories - memories like that are what life's really about.' (James, 58, foster carer)

Be part of someone's memories

Families come in all shapes and sizes.  They come with arguments, smiles, small victories, 'skint' knees and each with their own stories and memories.

Could you be at the heart of someone's memories?

Right now, Glasgow urgently needs more foster carers.

More Fostering memories

I am 18 badgeWhen I turned 18 I was about to start University, studying English.  Ten years earlier though I had hated school, played truant and could hardly read.  I wasn't stupid; I had just never had the chance to be part or a loving family.  My early years were chaotic.  Being fostered long-term saved my life.  This badge reminds me how far I've come.  (Caroline, 19, fostered)

When my sons were young, I loved taking them to the football.  As they grew up they wanted to go with their friends instead, and my wife and I gradually found ourselves spending more and more time on our own.  That's when we decided to look into providing respite care.  Now we look after children for short periods of time to give their parents a break and I find myself taking a whole new generation to the football.  One thing hasn't changed though - the pies are still as bad! (Bill, 49, foster carer)

Image of a ticket to Chuckle BrothersThings were difficult at home when I was a child and when I was ten I was placed in short-term foster care, together with my sister.  In the early weeks, when everything was new and strange, we clung to our favourite TV programmes.  They were familiar and comforting to us.  Our favourite was The Chuckle Brothers and we used to say their catchphrase to each other all the time.  To me, to you! Gradually our foster carers started saying it too.  It became a joke between us all, and my sister and I started to settle in.  After a year we were able to go back to home to our family but we still have good memories of that year and I still love The Chuckle Brothers. (Charlotte, 20, fostered)

image of a star

I keep this star on my fridge to remind me of all the children I've fostered over the years.  I've cared for children of all ages and many are vulnerable and insecure when they come to me, but I do my best to give them a stable, loving environment.  It's amazing to watch them gain in confidence.  In total I've fostered thirteen children and they're all stars to me. (Jennifer, 53, foster carer)

This is my giraffe.  It's got a long neck and a tiny body.  I drew it for my Auntie Cara.  I live with her.  She takes me to the swing park and the library.  Once we went to the zoo and I saw a real giraffe and two rhinos but the rhinos were sleeping.  (Ryan, aged 6, fostered)
