Mental Health

Glasgow City Council organises and provides a range of services for people living in the city who are affected by mental health problems. These include assessment of needs, specialist advice, practical support, respite, day activities and residential care.

Social Work Services responsibilities

In relation to people affected by mental health problems we have a responsibility to:

  • assess and arrange services for people according to what they need, or assess and arrange for people to receive a direct payment to buy their own services
  • encourage and develop a variety of services to respond to what people need

Social Work Services can arrange and pay for services for people affected by mental health problems to be provided by the City Council, voluntary organisations, private agencies and self-help groups.

For information on how to contact your local social work office see How to Access Services. For individuals affected an assessment of their needs will be carried out. Depending on the outcome, support services may be available to help the individual and possibly their carer(s) too. Glasgow City Council may provide such services, while others will be provided by voluntary organisations.

A financial contribution may be necessary but this will be based upon your ability to pay. For more information on assessments see What is an assessment?
