Older People Services

Glasgow City Council organises and provides a range of services for older people living in the city. These include
assessment of needs, support at home, care homes, short breaks and the provision of day care service, day opportunities and lunch clubs. Help is also also available with evening hospital visiting.

Specific services are also available to support people with dementia.

Social Work Services responsibilities

In relation to older people we have a responsibility to:

  • Assess and arrange services for people according to what they need or assess and arrange for people to receive a direct payment to buy their own services
  • Encourage and develop a variety of services to respond to what people need

Social Work Services can arrange and pay for services for older people to be provided by the City Council, voluntary organisations, private agencies, and self-help groups.

For information on how to contact your local social work office see How to Access Services.

Apart from initial information and advice it is usually necessary to be assessed for a service. There is no charge for assessment but for some services, for example, home care, there may be a charge, but this normally depends on your income. For more information on assessments see What is an assessment?.
