Greater Glasgow NHS Board and Glasgow City have commissioned the Advocacy Project to provide an advocacy service for older people.
This service aims to work with individuals or groups to support them to:
-
take greater control over the decisions which affect their lives
-
express their needs, opinions and aspirations for the future
-
access the resources and facilities available in their community
While the service is open to Glasgow City residents aged 65 and over, priority is given to those experiencing significant life changes, for example, people with a diagnosis of dementia, people undergoing assessment or review of their care provision.
The service operates an open referral system, accepting referrals from any source, including self-referrals.
Advocacy will never be provided against the service user’s wishes.
The service provides three different models of advocacy - professional, citizen and group.
Independent Professional Advocacy
-
usually issue based
- short or long-term
- project staff
Citizen Advocacy
- unpaid relationships
- one to one
- usually long-term
- volunteers
Collective Advocacy
- formal or informal
- issue based or not
- supported/facilitated independently
