Day Care for Older People

Day care services are for older people who can benefit from the support offered in a group setting. These services are part of a range of services available to support you to stay in your own home.

The services are delivered in day care centres, however there is also the opportunity to access more individual support through our day opportunities programme.

What is available for me at a day care centre?
  • group activities
  • individual support
  • information and advice

There are specialist day care services for people with dementia.

How do I arrange a day care service?

You will usually require an assessment in order to access the day care service. This is normally arranged through your local area service team. For information on how to contact your local social work office.

However, there are some day care services which have an emphasis on social and leisure support. Information on these can be obtained by direct contact with the centre.

What will it cost?

There is no charge for the service. In some day centres there may be a small charge for any meals provided.

What support is available to Carers?

If you are caring for someone, you can ask us to assess your needs. The assessment will look at how best we can support you in your role as a carer.

Support is also available through the carers centres and projects.

Short breaks (traditionally known as respite) can provide a break from caring responsibilities.
