Support at home

Glasgow City Council organises and provides a range of support at home services to meet your particular needs, or assesses and arranges for you to receive a Direct Payment to buy your own services.


Who can access Support at Home Services?
Support at Home Services are for people who need support with personal and practical /domestic tasks and housing support tasks.


Depending on your level of need, these support services can be provided through Social Work Services.

 

Adaptations
Social Work Services can help you to change your home to make it more suitable for you to live in.  To get adaptations an Occupational Therapist assessment is required, this can be arranged through your local Social Work Services office.

Equipment (sometimes called 'Aids to Living')
Social Work Services can provide you with equipment to help you in your day-to-day life.  Equipment can include items like raised toilet seats, stair lifts or specially designed kitchen equipment.  To access this, an Occupational Therapist assessment is required, this can be arranged through your local Social Work Services office.

Handy Person Service
Glasgow City Council's Handyperson Service provides practical help with tasks around the home that you may find difficult to do yourself.

Help is provided with small repairs, for example:

  • Fixing a leaky tap
  • Putting up shelves
  • Changing a lightbulb or fuse
  • Repairing or replacing locks

Home Care (also known as Home Help)
The main service provided is Home Care which covers a range of tasks including:

  • assistance with personal care including washing and dressing
  • assistance in getting ready for, and into and out of, bed
  • assistance with laundry
  • assistance with shopping
  • assistance with a range of practical/domestic tasks
  • help with meal preparation.  See also Meals at Home.

Enhanced Home Care
For people who require more help the Enhanced Home Care service can be accessed through a Social Work Services assessment.  Enhanced Home Care can provide help like:

  • assistance with Catheter Care
  • assistance with Skin Care
  • specialised assistance with eating
  • assistance with Stoma Care

Home From Hospital
In order to support you when you are leaving hospital, Glasgow City Council and the health services have developed a home care ordering system designed to allow you to leave hospital with support.

Meals at Home (previously Meals on Wheels)
If you are assessed as needing help with meal preparation you may be referred to Glasgow City Council's Meals at Home service.  This service will provide you with a regular supply of meals and equipment to heat and store meals if required.  The charge for this is £1.60 for each three course meal provided.  If needed, a carer will heat these meals for you.

Telecare
Telecare is an alarm system with a 24 hour response service.  The Telecare you will be provided with will include things like a smoke alarm and a pendant alarm that can be used to get help in an emergency.  Your assessor will discuss this fully with you before making any referral.  As part of an assessment for Home Care it may be decided that you can benefit from Telecare.

How do I arrange for a Support at Home service?
You will require an assessment in order to access these services. This is normally arranged through your local social work office. To contact your local social work office see How to Access Services. You can contact the team directly or someone can contact them on your behalf such as a relative, a friend or your doctor.

Priority for accessing all of these services will be given to those who:

  • Are at risk of going into care
  • Are at risk of going into hospital
  • Are returning from hospital
  • Are facing immediate risk of injury
  • Have a terminal illness
  • Are vulnerable children and families
  • Are carers

 

What will it cost?
Most Support at Home services are chargeable.  However, as part of your assessment of needs you will be offered a free financial assessment to ensure that you receive all appropriate benefits available to you.

If your income is below the Council's charging level you will not be charged for the service.
