Ask the Expert: Commercial Waste

Q:

Why do I have to pay for a contractor when I already pay my rates?

A:
The fee for the council to uplift commercial waste is not included in the rates.  It is the responsibility of the proprietor of a business to employ a registered waste contractor to uplift their waste; this contractor may or may not be the local authority.  The Environmental Protection Act 1990 states that the local authority shall make a reasonable charge for the collection of commercial waste and for any receptacle provided.
