Eco Schools

Most young people care deeply about environmental issues. They want to help but knowing what to do and how to do it is not always easy. Eco Schools is part of the answer. The Eco Schools programme is an international project designed to encourage whole-school action for the environment.

It is a recognised award scheme, rewarding and accrediting schools that have made a commitment to continuously improving their environmental performance.  The schools work through Bronze and Silver awards, cumulating in the prestigious Green Flag award.

It is also a learning resource, raising awareness of environmental issues through activities that link to curriculum subjects, and encouraging all the individuals within the school to appreciate that their actions matter.

The aim of the Eco Schools programme is to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of the school - for pupils, for staff, for parents and the wider community.

The Eco Schools programme can help schools to:

  • improve the school environment
  • reduce litter and waste
  • reduce energy and water bills
  • devise efficient ways of travelling to and from school
  • promote healthy lifestyles
  • encourage citizenship.

In Glasgow Eco Schools is proving incredibly popular, with over 220 schools registered in the programme.  Glasgow has 20 Green Flag schools, and five of these schools have gained their second green flag.
