Flood Risk Management

Glasgow, in common with all villages, towns and cities which straddle watercourses, is to an extent at risk from flooding.

All natural watercourses have floodplains, which are flooded at times when rivers or burns are in spate. The width of the floodplain depends on the shape of the land close to the river, and it is in these floodplains that there is a risk of flooding.

Local flooding away from rivers or burns can also happen when drainage systems cannot cope with very heavy rainfall.

Glasgow City Council has commissioned a number of studies into the risk of flooding from the River Clyde. As a result of these studies Glasgow City Council launched River Clyde Flood Strategy Commission and has completed the River Clyde Flood Management Strategy, River Corridor Supplementary Development Guide (available for download below).
