Glasgow City Council is required to review and assess air quality within its area. These reviews are the basis of local air quality management and are intended to compare current and future concentrations of key air pollutants with the objectives set in the National Air Quality Strategy.
The National Air Quality Strategy has set and updated target concentrations for eight key air pollutants – benzene, 1,3-butadiene, carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, particles and sulphur dioxide. This strategy is currently under review.
Glasgow City Council is required to undertake a continuing review of these air pollutants within its area. Ozone is dealt with separately at a national level.
Should an assessment indicate that levels of a particular pollutant will not achieve the objective by the target date then the area concerned should be designated an air quality management area and the local authority must draw up and implement an action plan aimed at reducing levels of the pollutant.

Air Quality Management and Action Plan
In Glasgow an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) for the City Centre for Nitrogen Dioxide was established in January 2002.
An Air Quality Action Plan has been produced detailing what actions the City Council and others are taking to tackle this problem. This can be viewed at the following link:

The action plan is currently under review to determine what successes these actions have achieved.
New Air Quality Management Areas
On 1st July 2007, The Executive Committee of Glasgow City Council approved two brand new Air Quality Management Areas and extended the current City Centre Air Quality Management Area to include North Street and Royston Road. In addition, this area was declared an Air Quality Management Area for particulate matter.
The two brand new Air Quality Management Areas are located at Parkhead Cross and Byres Road/Dumbarton Road. These have both been declared for the pollutant NO2.
