- infected persons should stay off school, work, nursery etc until two day after the diarrhoea stops
- hands must be washed thoroughly after visiting the toilet or preparing food
- hand washing with soap and warm water and then drying thoroughly with a clean towel is the most effective way to avoid spreading the infection
- towels must not be shared
- flush toilet after each use
- clean toilet seats, toilet flush handles and washhand basin taps daily or more often particularly after use by a person with diarrhoea
- to clean effectively use a wipe soaked with a solution of diluted household bleach
- keep clothing and bed linen clean and wash soiled items separately
