Mice

Glasgow City Council’s Land and Environmental Services provides a free service for the investigation and treatment of infestations of mice, within residential property.  All treatments will be carried out using the safest products available, together with break-back traps. You must ensure that neither children, nor pets have access to either the baits or the traps

The house mouse is less common now and most infestations are caused by field mice taking advantage of a more hospitable environment. As these creatures are a normal feature of natural wildlife, we do not carry out treatments outdoors or in unattached outbuildings.

Breeding Habits

Mice populations can develop very quickly, where conditions permit, and a female mouse can give birth to a litter of 5 to 6 young every 24 to 28 days. They have a theoretical life span of more than two years but, in general, they live for about 10 months

Signs

The first sign you would probably see would be droppings. These are dark in colour and about the size and shape of a grain of rice. You may also see footprints in dust or damage to food packaging, cables and woodwork. Sometimes shredded paper for nesting is found. Like rats, mice need to gnaw on hard materials to keep their front teeth in condition.

Prevention

To prevent re-infestation and to assist with any treatment that is being carried out, it is important that you carry out any proofing or hygiene measures which our Pest Control Officer recommends. Proofing is the technical term for any structural maintenance work which you have to carry out to deny access to mice. Hygiene controls are essentially depriving mice of any food source other than poison bait, or the bait placed on any mouse traps.

As well as making these recommendations, the Pest Control Officer will be able to offer you practical advice on how to resolve any proofing or hygiene issues

If you do not carry out these recommendations, and allow our Officer sufficient access to your home, there is a strong likelihood that the infestation will not be brought under control or that re-infestation will occur very quickly.
