Swimming Pool Sampling
Swimming is an enjoyable activity for many people. However, swimming pools can be a source of infection if the water is inadequately treated.
Monitoring using simple poolside tests is the responsibility of the pool operator.
To protect public health Environmental Protection Services undertake quarterly sampling of swimming pool water, including spas and plunge pools within leisure centres, educational establishments and private pools within hotels etc.
Officers take samples of pool water for chemical analysis and microbiological examination. The results will indicate the effectiveness of the disinfection process. Should results indicate inadequate pool water disinfection, immediate remedial measures must be undertaken or, in severe cases, the facility may be closed.
