Every year there are more than 400,000 tonnes of waste generated in Glasgow.

Environmental Protection Services, Cleansing division is responsible for the collection, recycling and disposal of waste generated within the city.

The service broadly consists of:

Since April 1996 Cleansing has operated a quality system certified first to ISO 9002 and more recently the ISO 9001:2000 standard. This has only been possible due to the commitment and professionalism shown by all staff.

The decision was taken by management to reinforce the service’s commitment to quality by introducing an environmental management system. The introduction of this system requires the Service to continually examine the impact its operations have on the environment. In September 2000 certification to the internationally recognised ISO 14001 standard was awarded.
