REDUCE
The most sustainable option is to reduce production of waste and use of natural resources. Don’t create rubbish in the first place and you will not have to Reuse or Recycle it!
What can you do?
• Buy products with minimum packaging • pick up fruit and veg loose & avoid pre-packed. • Buy reusable items instead of disposable • Buy refills for goods • Buy energy saving light bulbs • Refuse any unnecessary plastic bags • ask for a ‘bag for life’ • Stop Unwanted Mail • Try to repair goods instead of buying new items • Home composting
For more information see: SEPA - Waste Prevention Guide |

REUSE
Materials can be used again for same use or different purpose. Check if someone else could make use of it or try use things yourself more than once. What can you do?
• Donate goods to charity shops • Buy second hand goods • Use rechargeable batteries • Reuse jars & containers for storage – instead of cling film and foil • Use scrap paper • Reuse carrier bags you already have • Cover envelopes with a label and reuse • Use Real Nappies

RECYCLE
By making materials into something new the environment is protected by saving resources and energy and reducing the need for landfill.

BUY RECYCLED
As well as increasing recycling rates we must also develop the markets for the recycled materials.
UK wide programmes have been developed to help create markets for recycled materials. Wrap (Waste Resources Action Programme) and ReMade (Recycling Market Development) are financially supported by the Scottish Government to help with development of these markets.
Buying recycled products means the end market is kept strong and that is vital in order that recycling schemes can continue.
Many products contain recycled materials aluminium cans, glass bottles & jars, cardboard boxes, brown envelopes, writing paper, kitchen roll & toilet paper. You may be using them daily and do not even know.

REAL NAPPIES
Disposable nappies are non – biodegradable which means they do not break down easily in the landfill site. It could take hundreds of years for just one nappy to decompose. By using real nappies you can save money as well as helping to Reduce the impact on the environment.
Over the long term, parents can save up to £500 during their first born and of course the nappies can be re-used for the second, third etc born children. It is also said that children who use real nappies toilet train a lot quicker.
