Recycling facilities are available at all four Civic Amenity Sites. This page identifies the materials which can be recycled.

Books

 

Books can be recycled at Easter Queenslie and Shieldhall

Books can be also be reused if they are taken to charity shops or libraries.

Drink Cans and food tins

 

Rinsing out drink cans and food tins before recycling is helpful as it stops unpleasant smells.

Cans and tins can be recycled at:

Easter Queenslie,

Polmadie

and

Shieldhall

Remember they can also be recycled through Blue Bin Collections or Recycling Points.

Cardboard


 

Cardboard is mainly used as packaging and can be recycled many times.


Cardboard should be flattened and put into the bank provided. If possible try to remove any adhesives (labels or tape) and fastenings.


Recycle cardboard at Dawsholm, Easter Queenslie and Shieldhall.

Did you know shredded cardboard can also be added to your Home Composting.

 


Car Batteries

 

Car batteries should not be disposed of carelessly as they contain sulphuric acid which is a hazardous substance.
By recycling car batteries, components such as Plastic, Lead, Acid and Distilled Water can all be used again.

Cooking Oil

 

Household cooking oil can be disposed of at:

Dawsholm

and 

Polmadie.

We do not provide a service for the disposal of commercial cooking oil as this is chargeable.  You should contact your local commercial Waste Disposal Service for further information.

Engine Oil

 

Engine oil can be cleaned and reused.

Mixed Glass

 

Glass bottles and glass jars should be rinsed out and any lids or tops removed.

Remember mixed glass bottle and jars can also be recycled at certain Recycling Points throughout the city.


Paper

 

Newspapers, Magazines, Catalogues, Brochures, Unwanted Mail (Not envelopes) can be recycled at:

Polmadie

and

Shieldhall.

Remember paper can also be recycled through Blue Bin Collections or certain Recycling Points throughout the city.

Do not put cardboard into the paper banks. Cardboard can be recycled at:

Plastic Bottles

 

Plastic bottles can be recycled at:

Shieldhall.

Containers should be rinsed out and any lids or tops removed. Remember plastic bottles can also be recycled through Blue Bin Collections or certain Recycling Points throughout the city.

 

Textiles

 

Clothes, pairs of shoes, blankets, towels and bedding can all be recycled. Textiles are sorted and those that can be worn again go to the charity shop for resale or to needy countries. For those that cannot be worn, the fibres are reclaimed to make new products.

Electrical Items

 

Electronic parts are inside many household items and equipment we use everyday. Householders are strongly encouraged to dispose of electrical items separately from other household waste.

Fridges/Freezers can be recycled at:

NOTE: Fridges/Freezers contain gas that may harm the environment (Ozone depleting substances) and are classed as "Special Waste". Glasgow City Council offer a household Fridge/Freezer uplift service Free of Charge. For further information please contact the Councils Access Centre.

 

TVs and computer monitors can be recycled at:

Garden Waste

 

Grass cuttings, Flowers, Plants, Hedge trimmings, Weeds, Leaves can all be composted.

All garden waste must be put loose into the garden waste skip.

DO NOT put plastic bags or sacks into the skip or this will contaminate the load.

Alternatively, rather than buying compost for your garden, why not make your own? It is easy, cheap, saves you money and is good for the environment. See our Home Composting pages for more information.


Rubble

 

Small amounts of rubble (inert waste) from household DIY can be recycled at:

Remember if contractors are working for you then they have a ‘Duty of care’ under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and are legally required to remove any waste that is produced from their work.

Wood

DO NOT recycle Yellow pages along with other paper. The ink is heavily dyed and cannot be recycled along with other paper as it can cause problems for our recycling partners. Phone books and catalogues can be recycled in any Blue Bins that accept paper.
