Activity: |
Situated on the northbank, the site comprises Custom House Quay, Custom House Gardens and Carrick Quay.
The 1.3-hectare site is 450 metres long and incorporates South Portland Street Suspension Bridge. Custom House Quay was redeveloped in the early 1970s to create a riverside promenade, including a new bandstand with tiered seating and leisure facilities. This area has been identified as a major redevelopment opportunity, to introduce a mix of activities and upgrade a riverside promenade.
A planning application by Clydeside Properties Ltd was granted in July 2005.The overall aim is to create an extension to retail and commercial activities to the riverside, giving Clyde Street a new street frontage, improving access to and along the river, and creating a sustainable urban environment.
The approved proposals comprise:
- A landmark tower on the axis of Buchanan Street, to draw pedestrians to the river. This tower and 6 residential blocks will provide 348 residential units;
- A series of new public spaces fronting Custom House, St Andrew's RC Cathedral all connected to a new Clyde Walkway; and
- A 'new' Clyde Street with quay wall refurbishment;
- A pontoon for river access and activities.
