Timescale: 2003-23
Partners: Glasgow City Council, local groups and owners
Lead: Glasgow City Council
Target: To implement key projects
Status: Draft Masterplan noted 2004
Activity: Located to the west of the M8 and Kingston Bridge, the City Council appointed Alan Murray Architects in 2003 to complete one of a series of masterplans being prepared, for Finnieston, Anderston and Springfield. The key objective of the strategy is to provide a sustainable regeneration framework for future developments to be conceived.

The draft masterplan was completed in October 2003 and noted by the City Council in April 2004.

Based on four aspirations (removing barriers; improving river amenity; regaining streets and creating a vibrant community) the strategy identifies eight key regeneration components. These are:
  • Reconnecting the communities to and across the river, including a new pedestrian bridge between Anderston Quay and Springfield Quay;
  • Reinstating the urban grid pattern between Anderston and Finnieston and from Springfield Quay to Paisley Road West;
  • Creating a north/south boulevard from Park Circus to Anderston Quay;
  • Creating an east/west boulevard from Argyle Street to the SECC;
  • Reinstating the traditional street frontage of Argyle Street, Anderston;
  • Reinstating local distinctiveness through upgrading public spaces and public realm;
  • Reconsidering parking, traffic management and transport services (including land assembly); and
  • Introducing higher density, including focal buildings, with active street frontages and a mixture of uses to create sustainable communities.
