Green Travel

For many journeys there are viable alternatives to the private car and this section contains information to assist in encouraging more journeys to be made by public transport, walking, cycling and car sharing.

Recent surveys have shown that:

  • Cars account for nearly 79% of the total volume of traffic on Scottish roads
  • 86% of commuting journeys in Scotland were made as a single occupancy driver of car or a van
  • 26% of all journeys made in Scotland were for a distance of under 1 mile

Even if we switched from the private car for one journey a week this can still make a difference and the benefits include:

  • Improved health for the individual and community
  • A reduction in pollution
  • A reduction in congestion
  • Financial benefits to the individual

There are many alternative modes of transport that reduce single occupancy car trips at peak times.  Further information.
