Glasgow City Council is responsible for the development and maintenance of the road and footway network within the city.

Development & Maintenance

The Council is responsible for:

  • Maintaining around 1700 km of road and 3500 km of footways
  • ensuring the general fabric of roads, footpaths and cycleways is kept in a safe condition
  • ensuring structures, including bridges, are able to carry the loads required and implementing a programme of inspection and assessment of all bridges and other structures
  • providing effective winter maintenance for the safety of road users
  • maintaining street lighting to allow safe movement when dark
