Development & Maintenance

The Council is responsible for:

Maintaining around 1700 km of road and 3500 km of footways
ensuring the general fabric of roads, footpaths and cycleways is kept in a safe condition
ensuring structures, including bridges, are able to carry the loads required and implementing a programme of inspection and assessment of all bridges and other structures
providing effective winter maintenance for the safety of road users
maintaining street lighting to allow safe movement when dark
