Structures in Glasgow
There are over 900 road related structures in Glasgow, of which approximately 740 are bridges. Some 300 of these have to be maintained by the Council. The remaining bridges and structures are owned by the Scottish Executive, Network Rail and others.

Structures and bridges are essential links in the roads network on which commerce and people depend for daily life.
Bridges carry:
- roads
- footpaths
- cycleways
- railways
- canals
- pipes

Structures include:
- The Clyde Tunnel
- River Clyde Tidal Weir
- River Clyde Retaining Walls
- High Mast Lights
- Sign Gantries

Maintenance
European legislation increased the maximum weight of goods vehicles from 38 to 40/44 tonnes and all bridges must be assessed, and strengthened where necessary to ensure they can safely carry the new loads.
It is important that this work is carried out on the strategic road network in particular to:
- retain access for industrial users
- allow goods distribution throughout the city
- maintain public transport corridors
- avoid the diversion of large vehicles through unsuitable areas
Many bridges in Glasgow are of significant heritage value and feature strongly in many images of the city.
