Traffic Management Proposals for George Square

Glasgow City Council will shortly be undertaking a public statutory consultation on traffic management proposals for George Square

Glasgow City Council will shortly be undertaking a public statutory consultation on proposals to introduce the following measures:

  • Providing a bus gate (allowing access by buses, taxis, private hire cars and cycles) at Nelson Mandela Place. Access for servicing of shops would be maintained via Buchanan Street.
  • Removing meter controlled parking at Nelson Mandela Place, West George Street east of Buchanan Street, Dundas Street and George Square.
  • Providing a bus gate on North Hanover Street south of the access to Queen Street station and remove the northbound contraflow bus lane north of Queen Street station access.
  • Removing vehicular access on the east side of George Square outside the City Chambers.

Benefits of introducing this scheme would include:

  • Approximately 70% reduction in traffic travelling on the north side of George Square (900vehicles)
  • Reduction in traffic on North Hanover Street south of Cathedral Street by 75% (300 vehicles)
  • An improvement in bus journey times through Nelson Mandela Place / George Square.
  • Removal of vehicles circulating George Square looking for parking
  • Less traffic resulting in a reduction in harmful traffic emissions and thus improve the environment for pedestrians
  • Removal of traffic from in front of the City Chambers will improve pedestrian access.
  • Some improvement in the flow of traffic along Cochrane Street and St Vincent Street on the south side of George Square.
  • Reduced traffic will reduce pedestrian / vehicle conflicts particularly at the entrance to Queen Street Station
  • Improved access for buses to the busy stops on the north side of George Street

Details of the public consultation exercise will appear here when available.
