Additional Support Needs

The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004, often referred to as the ASL Act, introduces a new legal framework for supporting children and young people who require some additional support with their learning in pre-5 establishments and schools

The Act  places a duty on Education Services to ensure that all children and young people are provided with the support they require to help them to work towards achieving their potential and benefit from school (including pre-school) education

A Guide for Parents and Carers

The authority has produced an informative booklet  - Additional Support Needs - A Guide for Parents and Carers (500k) which outlines both policy and practice. As well as an English version of this guide we have also produced the following languages:

Policy and procedure documents

Schools and Units in Glasgow

Glasgow City Council advocates a policy of inclusion and a continuum of provision which aims to meet the needs of all children and young people in the most inclusive environment.

To achieve this, the city has a spectrum of provision for children with a range of disabilities from highly specialist schools and units to in-class support for children attending mainstream schools.

Additional Support Services
Glasgow Education Services also has a comprehensive Support Service structure accessed by education establishments, often on a referral basis.

The operational aspects of these services are subject to the specific requirements of the children and young people within their remit.

Nurture Groups
Glasgow City Council has invested significantly in the establishment of Nurture Groups within the primary mainstream sector.  These groups address the needs, on an early intervention model, of the children who require particular interventions to address their ability to engage with the formal education process.

Pre5 Assessment Centres
The authority’s early years provision includes two Pre-5 Assessment Centres which provide assessment and programmed intervention for children with specific profiles.

Early Years Communication Support Service (EYCS)
This Support Service complements existing services for children with autism is based in the four Family Learning Centres:

  • Govan
  • Drumchapel
  • Castlemilk
  • Hamiltonhill

This ensures that the authority can provide expertise on a local basis while maximising social inclusion opportunities.  Each of the centres has enhanced staffing to offer up to 3 places for pre-school children who require a more differentiated and intensive input.
