Nurture Groups

Glasgow City Council has invested significantly in the establishment of Nurture Groups within the primary mainstream sector.  The Nurture Groups address the needs, on an early intervention model, of the children who require particular interventions to address their ability to engage with the formal education process

Background
In recognising the success of this inclusive practice Glasgow City Council has embarked upon a major educational initiative and has fully funded the establishment of 58 nurture groups within the New Learning Communities

Nurture Groups provide proven effective learning environments for children who are vulnerable to social, emotional and behavioural difficulties

Nurture Group Staff to Pupil ratio
A teacher and pupil support assistant within each New Learning Community, have undertaken specific Nurture Group training. The number of children within a Nurture Group will normally range between 6 and 12 as this allows the development of appropriate social skills through co-operative learning activities.

Which children attend?
Children are identified for the nurture group through a series of assessments and observations, with additional support needs addressed by individualised, specific programmes. All children access the Curriculum.

How long will a child attend?
As the approach is a short-term focused intervention, backed by research, no child should remain in a group for longer than 4 school terms other than in exceptional circumstances. The process of re-integration to the mainstream class begins when a child enters a nurture group and is planned with the class teacher and nurture staff.

Nurture Groups are consistently monitored and evaluated and have been shown to be an extremely effective short-term intervention which has a lasting impact on the development and learning of children.

Parent/carer collaboration and support is vital and consent is always obtained before a child is included in a nurture group.
