Sensory Support Service

 

The Sensory Support Service, comprises of teachers with specialist training in hearing impairment or visual impairment. They support children and young people (birth to school leaving age) with sensory impairments.

Pre-school children
Teachers work closely with families and other support services when a baby or infant is first diagnosed as having a sensory impairment. Support is also offered to staff in pre-5 establishments prior to entry.

 

The staff offer:

  • Guidance to parents/carers and staff
  • Information on sensory impairment and agencies which can support them
  • Practical advice on the impairment and how to minimise the effects on the child’s parents, carers and siblings
  • Opportunities to meet with other families
  • Unbiased information on pre-5 provision and school placements
  • Working directly with the child and the parents/carers

 

Mainstream primary and secondary schools

  • Functional assessment of the hearing / visually impaired child or young person
  • In-service delivery on sensory impairment and its implications for the staff
  • Advice on hearing aid equipment and low vision aids
  • On-going advice and support for children, young people, staff and parents/carers
  • Differentiation and adaptation of teaching materials
  • Direct tuition when appropriate
  • Advice and support for special arrangements for public examinations and assessments
  • Specialist record keeping, provision of reports and attendance at review meetings
  • Liaison with other agencies

 

SEN schools
Support  is on an advisory and consultative basis
