Pre-school children
Teachers work closely with families and other support services when a baby or infant is first diagnosed as having a sensory impairment. Support is also offered to staff in pre-5 establishments prior to entry.
The staff offer:
- Guidance to parents/carers and staff
- Information on sensory impairment and agencies which can support them
- Practical advice on the impairment and how to minimise the effects on the child’s parents, carers and siblings
- Opportunities to meet with other families
- Unbiased information on pre-5 provision and school placements
- Working directly with the child and the parents/carers
Mainstream primary and secondary schools
- Functional assessment of the hearing / visually impaired child or young person
- In-service delivery on sensory impairment and its implications for the staff
- Advice on hearing aid equipment and low vision aids
- On-going advice and support for children, young people, staff and parents/carers
- Differentiation and adaptation of teaching materials
- Direct tuition when appropriate
- Advice and support for special arrangements for public examinations and assessments
- Specialist record keeping, provision of reports and attendance at review meetings
- Liaison with other agencies

Support is on an advisory and consultative basis
