Gaelic Education in Glasgow /
Foghlam tro Mheadhain na Gàidhlig ann an Glaschu
The Gaelic language and culture is part of Scotland’s heritage which the council wishes to support. The Gaelic Language Act came into force in 2006 and the Council will be developing further services to support the language in the city as part of its response to this legislation.
Gaelic medium education is an important part of the strategy to revitalise the language. In a Gaelic medium setting the Scottish Curriculum is delivered through the Gaelic language, which becomes the daily language used by children and young people in the school.
Pre-5 Gaelic Medium Provision
In the session 2006-07 this will be available at Rowena Nursery School, at the new Glasgow Gaelic School and at Little Scholars Nursery (a partnership provision at Langside College).
The curriculum is delivered through the medium of Gaelic in all three establishments and no previous knowledge of the language is required.
Primary Gaelic Medium Provision
The Bunsgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu formally closed in June 2005 to reopen as the Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu in August 2006. This is a 3-18 Gaelic Medium school with Pre-5 Primary and Secondary provision.
The new school is housed at the former Woodside Secondary Campus (Taobh A’Choille) and represents a major expansion of Gaelic Medium Education within the city.
There is a full programme of cultural opportunities for children attending Gaelic medium provision including tuition in piping, traditional song and dance and other related Gaelic cultural opportunities. Children are also given the opportunity to participate in the Mòd Nàiseanta and local Fèisean, Gaelic cultural events and the Celtic Connections Festival.
Secondary Gaelic Medium Provision
This has recently undergone major expansion with the opening of the Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu in August 2006. This will include the first ever stand alone Gaelic medium Secondary school. A large expansion of the teaching team in Gaelic Medium Education has recently taken place which will enable the new school to develop new courses and deliver a full curriculum through the medium of Gaelic.
As the school develops each year from the initial provision of 1st and 2nd year, the current Gaelic Secondary Unit at Hillpark Secondary will be phased out.
As with the primary facility, there will be a full range of Gaelic cultural experiences offered to pupils.
Further information on enrolment can be obtained directly from the establishments or from Education Offices (Adviser – Gaelic Education) on 0141 287 4115
