Food in schools
Glasgow City Council is committed to the long term aim of improving the health of its citizens. In 2003, the Scottish Executive published a report prepared by an expert panel on school meals entitled 'Hungry for Success'. This document provides nutritional guidelines and standards for school meal providers throughout Scotland. Glasgow City Council is responding positively to the these recommendations by addressing the educational and dietary needs of Glasgow's school pupils through a range of healthy eating initiatives.
In October 2007 a free meal pilot was launched for all P1,2 and 3 Glasgow City Council pupils, this pilot has been extended until June 2008.
All pupils up to and including primary 3 have the opportunity to enjoy a free meal every school day at lunch time in the Fuel Zone. See Free school meals pdf for further information.
Direct and Care Services are responsible for the management and operation of all school catering services. The department provides Glasgow’s school population, both primary and secondary, with around 46,000 meals per day and operates in schools with pupil rolls of up to 2300. Over 2500 members of staff are employed in the service.
