Glasgow's Refresh - water in schools

Refresh is a Glasgow City Council initiative designed to allow Glasgow school pupils access to fresh drinking water throughout the school day.  Almost 600 coolers have been installed in all Glasgow primary, secondary and SEN schools.  The coolers supply mains fed water that is filtered, chilled and ready to drink.

Research shows that most children and adults do not drink enough water during the day causing them to become dehydrated therefore pupils have been issued with free sports bottles which can be filled and taken to classroom, gym and dining hall.

Better hydration means better performance in school, creative and sporting activities and has proven to have long term health benefits. Water is also an excellent alternative to sugary drinks which cause tooth decay.

The Refresh coolers issue 2750 gallons of water per day, 5 million gallons per year.  Along with free sports bottles, pupil leaflets and bookmarks on the benefits of drinking water have been issued to all children to encourage them to get into the habit of drinking water at school and at home.
