Health in Glasgow Schools
Glasgow schools (ranging from Pre 5 to secondary) work in association with Greater Glasgow Health Board to encourage young people to develop knowledge, understanding and skills relating to good health.
Health education and promotion of healthy living as part of everyday school life is an important part of pupils’ education. Glasgow’s schools follow a specific Health Curriculum relating to health education and use a variety of strategies to ensure that life within the school puts these theories into practice.
Aspects of health promotion within schools include:
- physical environment: buildings and facilities which will allow pupils to learn and develop. eg safe building, furniture and fittings; security entrance; safe access routes into the building for pupils; staff trained in first aid; availability of health-related information.
- ethos: teaching which fosters good teacher-pupil relations; encourages openness and inclusion; encourages healthy life choices; develops a sense of caring for the environment; wide range of activities.
- pastoral care: procedures for children with medication requirements; good contact with health agencies and professionals; arrangements for emergency situations, support for children’s physical or mental well-being.
