Food and Health Policy Information Leaflet (1Mb)
The Council’s approach to food and health in schools is based on three principles:
- Ensuring food plays a positive role in improving and maintaining good health for Glasgow’s children
- Establishing consistent messages on food and health issues
- Building partnerships between families and children, school staff and the city’s agencies
Glasgow is committed to improving children’s diet through schools by:
- Embedding health messages about food in the curriculum
- Providing and actively promoting healthier options for children eating in schools
- Ensuring nutritional standards are established and followed by the school meals service
- Preventing any in-school advertising or promotion of foods high in salt, sugar, or saturated fats
- Encouraging a move towards healthier snacks, tuck shops, and packed lunches
- Restricting unhealthier options in vending machines and actively promoting healthier options
- Encouraging food vendors near schools to provide healthier options
These commitments will continue to be reviewed and audited. Glasgow City Council is working to create a healthier city and healthier Glaswegians, and this policy is key to delivering that aim.
