Pre 5 Curriculum
The early years of a child's life are ones of rapid growth and development. Children enter their pre school years with a significant background of learning experiences within their families and with friends, neighbours and relatives.
During their pre school years, provision for children is provided in a range of settings including the local authority, private and voluntary sectors. Staff work in close partnership with parents in developing children’s learning. The vital contribution of pre school education lies in developing and broadening the range of children’s learning experiences leaving them confident, eager and enthusiastic learners.
National Priorities for education
Birth to Three: Supporting our Youngest Children acts as valuable guidance for all those involved in caring for babies and very young children. This may include early years workers, social care and health practitioners, and students preparing to work in early years settings. It identifies the key features of relationships, responsiveness and respect that support sensitive and well-informed approaches to this age group and beyond.

Curriculum Framework for Children 3-5
All pre-five establishments follow the national curriculum, "Curriculum Framework for Children 3-5"

The curriculum is experiential and child centered, advocating a child centered approach, 'learning through play' and covering five key aspects of learning. Each key aspect is broken down into features of learning, examples of features of learning can be found below:
- emotional, personal and social development develop confidence, self-esteem and a sense of security - care for themselves and their personal safety

communication and languagehaving fun with language and making stories - listening to other children and adults during social activities and play

knowledge and understanding of the world develop their powers of observation using their senses - recognise objects by sight, sound, touch, smell and taste

expressive and aesthetic investigate and use a variety of media and techniques such as painting, drawing, printing and modelling with fabrics, clay and other materials - express thoughts and feelings in pictures, paintings and models

enjoy energetic activity both indoors and out and the feeling of well being that it brings - explore different ways in which they can use their bodies in physical activity
The range of differences in children’s development and learning is considerable in the early years. Nevertheless all children should have the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the full range of experiences described.
