Primary Curriculum
The main aims of primary education in Glasgow are to improve education and equip children for life in the 21st century.
Primary education begins when a child is between 4½ and 5 and finishes at around the age of 12. The curriculum provides children with a range of skills as well as knowledge and understanding of specific subjects.
Children in Glasgow’s primary schools study a range of subjects within a curriculum based on certain clear principles. Those principles ensure:
· breadth
· balance
· relevance
· continuity and progression
· provision for the individual
· active involvement of children and of parents
· multi-cultural and anti-racist education
· equality of opportunity
Pupils study:
- language
- listening and talking

- writing
- modern languages for pupils in P6 and P7 (usually French but some schools offer German, Italian or Spanish)
- mathematics
- environmental studies
- science
- technology
- people in the past
- people and place
- people in society
- religious and moral education
- expressive arts
- art and design
- drama
- physical education
- music
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
- Personal and Social Development and Health Education
Support is also provided for pupils:
· whose first language is not English
· who have special educational needs
· learning within the Gaelic language medium
A wide variety of teaching methods is used, with schools making increased use of computer technology.
