The decision to start Primary 1 school children after the September weekend was ratified at the Education Services committee on Thursday 10th March 2005
Consultation on the preferred full-time start date for Primary 1 pupils brought about by a number of enquiries from parents, regarding the necessity for a phased induction
A previous consultation exercise took place in 1997, but since then there has been considerable development in the provision of Pre-5 education with 90% of children attending a nursery
A total of 6827 responses to the consultation were received from:
- parents of pupils due to start Primary 1 in August 2005
- parents of Pre-5 children
- primary school staff
- nursery staff
- school boards
- relevant trade unions
- relevant professional associations
Options for the full-time were:
- after the October week holiday
- after the September weekend
- after a 1-week induction
- from day one
- other
After analysis of the responses, the greatest percentage was in favour of the new start date of after the September weekend
Education Services will monitor the effect of the policy in meeting children's needs at the early stage of education. A report will be presented to committee at the end of a 3-year period
