Curriculum from S1 to S6

The curriculum within secondary schools

First Year at Secondary School

Glasgow’s secondary schools operate a common course in the first year and in most second years.

A typical course in this early stage would be:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Technology (Home Economics, Technical Education)
  • ICT (Information and Communication Technology)
  • Modern Language
  • Social Subjects
  • Creative and Aesthetic (Art, Drama and Music)
  • Science
  • Physical Education
  • Religious Education
  • Personal and Social Education

Third Year at Secondary School

[The course opportunities are currently being reviewed with the possibility of Standard Grade being available in the second year]

From third (or possibly second) year, pupils choose the subjects they wish to study. There is discussion between the pupils, school and home to agree a programme of study suited to the needs, interests and aptitudes of the pupil.

At the stage of choosing subjects, the curriculum is largely delivered through the
Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

The SQA provides nationally certified courses. In addition to English, Mathematics, Social Subjects, Sciences and a Modern Language, pupils can choose from a variety of subjects within discrete subject areas.  Pre-vocational courses are also available.

As pupils progress, they continue to choose from a wide range of courses, either new ones or building on prior studies. In addition, some pupils opt for a pre-vocational course as an alternative to one subject.

Fifth and Sixth Year at Secondary School

Pupils staying at school for a fifth or sixth year can choose from a wide range of courses:

  • SQA Access and Intermediate Courses
  • SQA Higher Grade courses
  • SQA Advanced Higher
  • Vocationally based units and courses

Information on the courses available in individual schools is contained in the school handbook.
