Teach in Glasgow

Help us create the new future
Glasgow is Scotland’s largest education authority. It is committed to raising standards and improving provision across its education service. Our performance is improving - pupils are doing better in the national examinations and pupil attainment has been improving year on year in literacy and numeracy. But the challenge remains: we need to keep a clear focus on improving the life chances of our children and young people.
The Craft of the Classroom Teacher
Teachers make a huge impact on the prospects of our children and young people. Teachers create exciting lessons that motivate our young people and the craft of the classroom teacher is critically important in delivering quality in every classroom in the city. Our teachers have responsiblity for developing and delivering the curriculum so that classroom activities, teaching and learning are of the highest quality.
Glasgow City Council has worked towards clarifying and giving some detail to the Duties of Teachers (164k), by identifying a range of tasks within key areas of responsibility. These also assist teachers to identify their continuing professional development needs.
Opportunities for Teachers
Glasgow wishes to recruit the best - class teachers, principal teachers and senior managers who demonstrate the potential or proven abilities of excellence in what they do

Important News for All Teachers
The Council has adopted a new process for the appointment of teachers to posts in denominational schools. In order to fully comply with the requirements of Section 21(2)(i) of the Education (Scotland) Act 1980 appointments to all posts in the denominational sector will be subject to Roman Catholic Church approval. All teachers are eligible to apply for such approval.
The recruitment process for posts in denominational schools will be the same as for posts in non-denominational schools up to the point of selection of the preferred candidate. Thereafter, for posts in denominational schools, the preferred candidate will be asked to provide evidence of Roman Catholic Church approval and the appointment will not be confirmed unless this is provided. This is similar to the offer of appointment being subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure check.
Information on how to seek Roman Catholic Church approval is available on the Scottish Catholic Education Website (http://www.sces.uk.com/) under the heading of Teaching.
We have placed effective learning and teaching at the heart of our on-going work, for it is in each classroom in Glasgow that teachers make a difference. Support for teachersand the teaching process is therefore crucial in attempts by Glasgow City Council to raise educational standards in the city. The range of support mechanisms is extensive.
Probationer Placement Scheme
Our induction scheme for new teachers is recognised nationally as a high quality programme. A structured support programme has been developed, comprising daytime training programme and twilight opportunities.
Probationer WIKI
All probationer teachers will have access to a WIKI which will enable them to receive information about the support programme, share resources and take part in an online discussion forum.
The Local Negotiating Committee for Teachers
The council is committed to working closely with the Teacher Trade Unions through the Local Negotiating Committee for Teachers to ensure the effective implementation of 'A Teaching Profession for the 21st Century'. A number of agreements (LNCT Circulars) have been reached that are assisting the process
