Following the national debate on education initiated by the Scottish Executive in 2002, the Executive established a review group in November 2003 to identify the purposes of education 3-18 and principles for the design of the curriculum. The outcome of the work of the group was 'A Curriculum for Excellence' published the following year.

In Scotland there has been a significant amount of work done on the 5-14 curriculum and in the creation of quality resources for teaching and learning. There has also been an extremely strong focus on effective teaching and learning most recently incorporating developments in formative assessment
We are committed to a curriculum that is sufficiently flexible to meet the needs of children and young people and are developing a pre-vocational programme for secondary pupils for whom the traditional curricular provision may not be entirely appropriate.
