New Influences and Factors

Education is a priority for Glasgow City Council: it is at the heart of the city's quest to renew the spirit and aspirations of its people.  The commitment of the Council is demonstrated by progress made in the modernisation of school provision across the city.

Glasgow is changing.  It is developing as a modern cosmopolitan city of the 21st Century.  It is now the second biggest retail centre in the United Kingdom and inward investment has never been higher. Physical regeneration is evident across many parts of the city.

The influences and factors that have had an impact on the shape and form of the curriculum we offer in schools include:

  • Global social, political and economic changes
  • The need to increase the economic performance of the nation, reflect its growing diversity, improve health and reduce poverty
  • Changes in the demands and patterns of employment and the likelihood of new and quite different jobs during an individual’s working life
  • The changing educational process reflecting the growing understanding of the different ways in which children learn and how this can be best supported
  • The increasing application of new technologies to enrich learning
  • The increasing opportunities for fully using the talents and contributions of the growing range of adults currently involved in educating our children, and for capitalising on the developing role of the school as a partner with parents, other providers of services for children, colleges and other organisations, and the community
