Exclusions

Glasgow City Council Education Services promotes a policy of inclusion, and every effort is made to ensure continuity of education for all children.

There are occasions when behaviours can pose such a significant risk that the headteacher will take a decision to temporarily exclude a pupil. Schools have the delegated power to exclude a pupil for a period of up to 10 school days.

In instances of assault, possession of an offensive weapon, or drug trafficking, the matter can be referred to the Executive Director of Education Services for consideration of permanent exclusion. These situations are rare.

If a pupil is permanently excluded, the department will make arrangements for transfer to another school.

Homework

Given the legal requirements to provide education during a period of exclusion, the following action will be taken by the school:

  • up to 4 days - homework will be provided and marked on return
  • up to 5 days - homework will be provided and marked on return plus the offer of one tutorial session
  • 5-10 days - homework will be provided and marked on return plus the offer of two tutorial sessions

Appeal

Parents, and young people over 16 years, have the right to appeal against the decision by the school or the director to exclude. Guidance on the appeal procedures is available from education services headquarters, and individual schools.

The authority’s policy and procedures governing exclusion from school is contained in Management Circular 8 - Exclusion of children and young people from school, a copy of which is held in every school.
