Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

The Education Maintenance Allowance Scheme is a Scottish Executive initiative administered by Glasgow City Council Education Services. The scheme is intended to encourage young people to stay in further education to gain qualifications that will enhance their job prospects.


What is an EMA?

An EMA is a weekly allowance of between £10 and £30 payable to eligible students who have achieved 100% attendance per week at school. It is payable on a 2 weekly basis.

Two bonuses of £150 each are also available for attendance and achievement, and are payable in January and June each year.


Do you qualify for an EMA?
  • Are you aged 16-19 years old 
  • Are you willing to participate in an approved learning agreement at school?
  • Do you attend school for a minimum of 21 guided learning hours per week?
  • Do you attend a Glasgow School?
  • Is your household income £32,316 per annum or less?


Please Note:
Students who are 16 before 1st June are not entitled to receive a clothing grant for the following school session if they are awarded an EMA. However, they may still be entitled to a Free School Meal.
