Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
The Education Maintenance Allowance Scheme is a Scottish Government initiative administered by Glasgow City Council Corporate Services. The scheme is intended to encourage young people of low income families to stay in further education to gain qualifications that will enhance their job prospects.
What is an EMA?
An EMA is a weekly allowance payable to eligible students who have achieved 100% attendance per week at school. It is payable on a 2 weekly basis.
The following payments will apply for academic session 2010/2011.

The Scottish Ministers reserve the right to review the EMA programme at anytime.
Do you qualify for an EMA?
- Do you attend a Glasgow School?
- Are you aged 16-19 years old
- Do you attend school for a minimum of 21 guided learning hours per week?
- Are you willing to participate in an approved learning agreement at school?
- For session 2011/2012 bonus payments have now stopped
Please Note:
Students who have reached the age of 16 or over on or before 31 May 2011 and have applied for (or intend to apply for) an Education Maintenance Allowance will NOT be awarded a clothing grant. However, they may still be entitled to a Free School Meal.
How to Apply for an EMA:
Students can download an Application Form (1Mb - 16 pages). Hard copies of the form will be available in our secondary schools from Monday 27 June 2011 and are also available from Education HQ, Wheatley House, 25 Cochrane Street, Glasgow G1 1HL.
