FREE SCHOOL TRANSPORT

Glasgow City Council can provide free school transport for children

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

Glasgow City Council will provide free school transport for your child if your child:

  • lives more than one mile away from his or her catchment primary school, travelling by the shortest safe walking route
  • lives more than two miles away from his or her catchment secondary school, travelling by the shortest safe walking route
  • has been assessed to attend a school or centre to meet the requirements of his or her special educational needs
  • would have to walk a route to school which Glasgow City Council Road Safety Officers consider unsafe
  • has been recommended for free school transport by their doctor and the School Medical Officer

What free school transport means

The choice of the precise mode of transport depends on a variety of factors and is decided by Education Services after taking all circumstances into account.

This can result in the following:

  • dedicated school contract bus
  • bus pass for use on local service buses
  • train pass for use on service trains
  • taxi or private hired cars and minibuses
  • the City Council's own transport vehicles

When to apply

If your child is starting primary school you should apply when you register him or her for school.

If your child is transferring to secondary school you should apply in February of his or her last year in primary school.

You can apply at a later time but there could be a delay while arrangements are made.

If you move house at any time during the year, a fresh application should be made.

Please Note:

Children who attend a school as the result of a successful Placing Request are not entitled to free transport.  It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to organise transport to the school

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS SCHOOL CHILDREN

The authority provides dedicated transport; buses or taxis; or bus passes for all pupils in attendance at special schools or units. Transport is commissioned by Education Services and organised by Building Services.

  • the City Councils own transport vehicles

The authority also provides transport in response to a range of other circumstances such as mobility problems, certain medical conditions and homelessness. Applications can be made by schools, psychological services, social work services and parents.
