Racism
Glasgow City Council is committed to the principles of equality of opportunity and social justice. It affirms the right of all citizens to live free from discrimination and prejudice. It pledges to 'fight discrimination and encourage a vibrant multicultural Glasgow'.
Glasgow, the largest and most cosmopolitan city in Scotland, has the largest black and ethnic minority population in Scotland.
The population in Primary, Secondary and ASL educational establishments is approximateley 65,000. Approximately 9670 (approx. 14.8%) of those belong to black and ethnic minority groups.
Currently, there are approximately 2,180 (3.3%) asylum seeker and refugee children and young people enrolled in Primary, Secondary and ASL establishments in Glasgow.
In addition, over the last 3 years, over 3,500 foreign national children and young people have enrolled. The main areas of origin are Eastern Europe (EU Accession states) and the Indian sub-continent.
Glasgow's Commitment
The major priority for education in Glasgow is raising attainment. Other priorities include social inclusion and economic development. Race equality is a fundamental right and is central to the achievement of all. Racism limits the educational achievement of black and ethnic minority children and young people, and damages the healthy personal and social development of all young people.
There is no place for racism within any educational establishment in Glasgow. Education Services will not tolerate racism within any of its activities or establishments.
