Sense over Sectarianism

To enable people to challenge the existing attitudes, behaviour and assumptions which contribute to bigotry, sectarianism and division within society.

We tend to think of sectarianism as rivalry between Protestants, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Sunni and other religions.  But sectarianism is actually much broader than this.

Sectarianism is when these religious differences are used as an excuse for prejudice. It can take the form of name-calling, telling jokes, songs, chants or other forms of verbal abuse and even violence.

Glasgow City Council Education Services promote anti-sectarianism issues in the following ways:

  • allocate grants enabling the development of projects that challenge sectarianism and bigotry in the wider Glasgow area
  • Raise awareness of how language and actions contribute towards sectarianism and bigotry
  • Promote positive social integration, encouraging inter-cultural understanding and create examples of good practice
  • Develop and support work in schools that focuses on challenging sectarianism and bigotry
  • Hold annual celebrations for achievements of funded projects

The Sense over Sectarianism Partnership consists of 6 organisations in Glasgow:
• Glasgow City Council
• Nil By Mouth
• Rangers FC
• Celtic FC
• Glasgow Presbytery of the Church of Scotland
• Archdiocese of Glasgow Roman Catholic Church
