English as an Additional Language (EAL) Service

Provides support to children and young people with EAL who attend educational establishments in Glasgow.

There are 137 EAL teachers in Glasgow.  They work in early years, primary, secondary and additional support for learning establishments.

The EAL Service is available to all children and young people with EAL.  This includes:
• Children and young people who have recently arrived in Glasgow from another country and are new to learning English
• Children and young people who have always lived in Glasgow but use a language other than English at home.

The majority of EAL teachers are based in schools and early years establishments.

School based EAL Teachers
Work alongside other school staff to ensure children and young people with EAL are able to access the curriculum and achieve their potential. EAL teachers work with children and young people at all stages of their English language development, from those who are learning English for the first time to those who have been using English for many years but still require support to develop their higher order language skills.

The ASL/EAL Peripatetic Service consists of two teams:
• The ASL/EAL Response Team supports schools which have small numbers of children and young people with EAL or where there has been a big increase in numbers over a short period of time.
• The ASL/EAL Specialist Team works with children and young people who have EAL and other additional support needs.

The EAL Service also provides:
• CPD for EAL staff, class/subject teachers, other school staff
• Advice and support for schools on all issues to do with children and young people with EAL

EAL Wiki – anyone who works with children and young people with EAL in Glasgow can become a member of the EAL wikispace.  To join, please send an email to Maria Walker
