No enrolment can take place until the child is actually resident in the city
To enrol a child at a school in Glasgow, the following documentation should be taken to the local school to complete the enrolment:
- birth certificate
- passport
- proof of residency in Glasgow (example: property rental agreement, utility bill)
- evidence of relationship between child and adult enrolling her/him (example parent/child joint passport, parent's name on birth certificate)
If necessary, the school will book an interpreter to assist with the enrolment
All decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, in full consultation with parents
Bilingual Support Units - now known as ASL/EAL Support Services
Unless the local school already has specialist staff to support bilingual pupils, they may (with parental permission) refer the child to one of the city's central ASL/EAL Support Services. One unit is for primary school children and the other is for secondary school children and young people
These services support children who are recent arrivals in the city and who are new to the English language. Children usually attend the unit for approximately 9 months. They are given lessons in all subjects, but with an emphasis on the English language. After this, children return to their local school to continue their education. Some on-going support is provided
