Modernising the School Estate

Glasgow's investment in the school estate to provide 21st Century schools

Challenges facing the School Estate

Projected trends for the Secondary school population in Glasgow continue to demonstrate a decline over the next 10 years from a current roll of 28,960 to a projected roll of 23,351 in 2014 (19% decline).  The trend for the Primary sector is similar with a drop from 40,552 in 2004 to 36,688 by 2014 (12% decline)

In contrast, the demand for Pre 5 services in the city has significantly increased as a result of the funding which can be accessed by parents through Childcare Strategy.

The original School Estate Plan submitted in January 2004 outlined the major PPP investment programme undertaken to rationalise the secondary sector – Project 2002.

It is widely acknowledged that this project has delivered an improved learning environment, a quality ICT service and excellent leisure and recreational facilities that contribute to and support lifelong learning initiatives and other community developments.

Pre12 Strategy Project

The council recognised that the reform could not be restricted to the secondary sector and has now embarked on a large scale reform of the remainder of the school estate

Building our Future

Education Services has produced an informative DVD giving details about the positive aspects of investing in Glasgow schools.  The film depicts new schools throughout the city and includes interviews with school staff, parents and pupils.

The Glasgow Schools ICT Network

There has been a major investment made in providing a supportive Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure for schools. All schools are now joined to a sophisticated interconnect for Education Services.

The networks at present have in excess of 16,000 personal computers and printers. The system is maintained to a high standard through the council's Managed Service.

As well as providing access to high quality Learning and Teaching software resources and content, the Schools Network provides every member of staff and pupil with secure access to e-mail, internet and personal document storage.

Learning through ICT (1.4Mb) extends beyond the use of personal computers with a significant increase in the use of interactive whiteboards, digital projectors and digital video and still photography; all enhancing the quality of Learning and Teaching taking place in Glasgow's classrooms.

Regeneration of the City

Glasgow City Council Education Services has a significant role to play in the physical, social and economic regeneration of the city.

Schools have a multi-dimensional role to fulfil in the theatre of regeneration, ensuring that pupils maximise their potential and are well placed to benefit from the learning process.

Positive, public perception of the school system in Glasgow is vital in attracting to and retaining families in the city.
