Safety is an important issue for everyone. While illnesses such as heart and respiratory diseases are the major causes of death in Scotland, there is a significant percentage of accidental deaths.

Falls are the highest cause of unintentional injury in Scotland. The majority of these occur in and around the home, with the very young and elderly most at risk. Scotland has also recorded a significantly higher rate of home fire fatalities and injuries than the UK average in 1998.  Road traffic accidents cause the majority of accidental deaths in children and young people in Scotland.
