The Council’s Responsibility for Health & Safety in Service Provision
It is the policy and responsibility of Glasgow City Council to safeguard the Health, Safety and Welfare of its employees and all persons including members of the public likely to be affected by its services and activities. In discharging its ‘duty of care’ responsibility to members of the public, pupils, etc the Council is reflecting the aims and provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
Working in conjunction with our various partners, including the Health & Safety Executive, Glasgow City Council operates positive policies for health and safety at each of our Schools, Leisure Centres, Libraries and any other venues and premises used by members of the public. The framework for development, implementation, and monitoring of these policies is contained within the Council’s Health and Safety Management System.
As well as routine management of Health & Safety within Council premises, outside events such as Fireworks, Switch On and Hogmanay are planned well in advance with a focus on public safety. The service area with lead responsibility for managing an event will have the main responsibility for ensuring health & safety, and the Council’s Corporate Health and Safety Group provides additional support and advice as necessary.
