Emergencies Planning

The Emergencies Planning Unit provides the "one door" gateway between the Emergency Services (Police, Fire, Ambulance and Coastguard) and Glasgow City Council.

In the event of a major incident occurring within the City of Glasgow, the Emergencies Planning Unit will be alerted by Strathclyde Police and the Emergencies Planning Officers will immediately assess the situation and thereafter decide which Council Services should respond, and arrange the deployment of the appropriate officers.  They will also inform the relevant elected members and Senior Council Officials. In addition the services of voluntary agencies may also be requested.

There are many scenarios which necessitate action by the Emergencies Planning Unit, including Fire, Flooding, Explosion, Travel Accident, Chemical Spill and Dangerous Buildings.

The Emergency Services are responsible for evacuation of the public from the area of the incident, and the Emergencies Planning Unit will thereafter arrange a Rest Centre, or other place of safety to be opened, and arrange with other Council Services to provide feeding and temporary accommodation when appropriate.

The Emergencies Planning Unit plans for major incidents, writing contingency plans which are either required by legislation or by good practice in agreement with the Strathclyde Emergencies Co-ordination Group, an organisation which brings together the Emergency Services, Local Authorities and Utilities within the Strathclyde area.

The Emergencies Planning Unit is also involved in the planning of Council events.
